Nations

All players control at least one nation. You are allowed to have multiple nations, but only one of them may be a member of the World Assembly at a time. Your nation has a number of statistics, which can be changed in different ways:

  • Your flag, title, motto, currency and national animal, capital, leader and state religion, which you can change in your settings;
  • Your category, civil rights, economy and political freedom ratings, tax rate, key industries, budget, economic composition and demographics, which can be changed indirectly based on how you decide your issues or World Assembly resolutions;
  • Your population, which will simply increase over time.

Custom values for your title are only available once your population has reached 500 million, and to unlock the fields for capital, leader and state religion, you must first get the related issue and pick an appropriate option.

Issues

Issues are a key element of gameplay in NationStates. They cover a various topics, ranging from real life issues to speculative ones. The player can choose from the settings menu whether to have one per weekday, one per day, two per weekday, or two per day. For each issue several options are given. Choosing a position will change your nation at update. Be warned, a certain position will often have unexpected or exaggerated results, and any decision to implement a new government program will increase your tax rate. If you don't like any of the options given, you can dismiss the issue without altering your nation.

Regions

All nations are located in one of the region's which exist in the game. Regions can be divided into two groups, Game Created Regions (GCR) and User Created Regions (UCR).

Game Created Regions are the seven regions created by the game. The name refers to their function. All newly founded nations appear in either the Pacific (TP), the North Pacific (TNP), the East Pacific (TEP), the South Pacific (TSP) or the the West Pacific (TWP) which are referred to as feeders, refounded ones appear in Lazarus and nations ejected from a region are sent to the Rejected Realms (TRR). Game Created Regions are the only regions from which other users can recruit.

All other regions are User Created Regions, created by players. Unlike feeders, new nations must always move themselves into these regions. User Created Regions also have or had a founder nation.
