Pragmia (IPA: [pɹægmiːə]), or Prag for short, is a resident and Citizen of Taijitu, and currently serving as both the Speaker of the Senate and the Minister of the Community.
Pragmia in Nationstates
Pragmia first came to nationstates in 2005, as the nation of Ginoata. With time, Ginoata ceased to exist and was superceded by Vaduzkalia, which resided for a time in Eurasia. It was whilst in Eurasia that Pragmia first had a chance to experience RP, namely as small, densely populated and corrupt principality occupying the Crimean Penninsula. The region however was small, and in time outside pressures and the lack of activity caused Pragmia to lose interest, and Vaduzkalia was left to cease to exist as well.
It was in 2006 that Pragmia returned to the game, this time around as Pragmia. Shortly after creating his nation, Pragmia was recruited to the then rapidly growing and promising region of the Lexicon. There, he further indulged and refined his interests in RP, as well as began to become involved in the OOC elements of the Nationstates game to a far greater degree than ever before.
When in the January of 2007 the duly elected Delegate of the Lexicon, Sovereign Dixie, was ejected from the region with his High Council, Pragmia followed them in to the new region of Taijitu. There, he played a great role in the region's foundation by drafting the region's constition. Following this, Pragmia ran for the office of Speaker unopposed. Pragmia later ran for and won a second term, facing off against Soly, Gnoled Ttam and Sovereign Dixie this time.
Pragmia in Roleplay
Pragmia no longer roleplays the Federal Republic of Pragmia proper, instead directing his time and efforts towards the nation of Mor'os. While in the Lexicon though, Pragmia did indeed roleplay his namesake nation, whose government and policies were in large based on his own.
Government
In large the system of government employed in Pragmia draws on that of the United States: a federal, presidential republic, but with key differences.
Like the Congress of the United States, the Congress of Pragmia is divided into a lower and upper house, also named the House of Representatives and the Senate. Unlike the United States however, the seats in the House are apportioned on a national level without regards for the borders of the nation's constituent states. Also important, the act of gerrymandering is expressly forbidden by the national Constitution, and federal law provides strict, objective and mathematical guidelines for redistricting. Elections for seats in both houses are not staggered.
The president is elected directly by a popular vote, with no electoral college of any sort.
The method in which voting is conducted is by far one of the most far reaching and significant differences. Rather than employing a plurality system of voting, elections in Pragmia are conducted using Single Transferable Vote for legislatures and Condorcet for the President.
