During the Novic Civil War, the Royalists was a name used to refer to the central government of the Kingdom of Novmir, specifically the northern duchies which supported a pan-Novic coalition or empire. Although the Royalists had supporters both North and South, including the contentious southern Royalist enclave of [duchy], for purposes of brevity the Royalist camp has also been referred to simply as "the North", both then and now.

Overview

The term originated from the official name of the nation of Novmir prior to 1855 - the "Kingdom of Novmir". "Royalist" implied that the person or place referred to supported the Royal Family of Novmir, and by association the central government and Ducal Council. Even before the war started, "Royalist" was used north and south to refer to those with conservative views supporting a more-or-less absolute central government, and/or those opposing devolution.

During the Novic Civil War, those supportive of the central government both north and south were referred to as "Royalists", though the government of Novmir attempted to avoid use of this term; in their eyes all subjects, including those in the South who had "lost their way", were Royalists. Many Southern Royalists on the eve of the war would go on to support their native land once secession was fact; still, over 120,000 men from seceding duchies fought for the Royalists, and every southern duchy raised regiments of Royalist soldiers.

During the Civil War, the government and most people in the North referred to their side as the "Macovians"; however, this term has fallen out of use since far more northern duchies than Macovy fought for the central government. Since the end of the Civil War, the term "Northern" has been a widely used synonym for the Royalist side of the conflict. "Royalist" is used in contexts where "Northern" is not seen as accurate, "Novmir" confusing, or "Macovian" dated or derogatory.

In comparison to the Southern League of Free States which it opposed, the Royalists controlled land that was highly industrialized and populated. The Royalist duchies had nearly 3 times the population as the Separatist duchies. This advantage in industry and population were vital factors in the Royalist victory in the Civil War.
